For the thousands of seriously wounded veterans  in Afghanistan and Iraq, the struggle to overcome the challenges in their lives caused by the injuries and illnesses they sustained in combat is one that must be endured every day.

The Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes was established to ensure that in return for the sacrifices they made for us, these wounded veterans and their families receive all the support needed to restore their hope and rebuild their lives.

Founded in 2004 as a non-profit, non-partisan 501(c) (3) organization, the Coalition is among the nation’s leading charities whose donors provide the wounded veterans and families of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn the aid and assistance needed for their long roads to recovery.

Heroes Linked was conceived by individuals who had not served in the U.S. military and wanted to actively honor those that did. Servicepersons transitioning out of active duty military have overwhelmingly said that the biggest challenge lying ahead of them is navigating the civilian job market. And their ranks will swell in coming years. Defense cutbacks will push more than 100,000 servicepersons out of the military each year for the next decade, including tens of thousands who expected their service to be a career.

Heroes Linked rests upon the simple premise that Americans who did not serve in the military possess something that is of great value to Veterans and servicepersons transitioning out of the military – their career experiences and knowledge of the private sector job market. The question was, how could such knowledge be best imparted to the thousands that could benefit from it? Understanding the power of personal mentoring for both Advisor and Advisee, the challenge was adapting the model to fit the needs of the swelling Veterans community. The result became Heroes Linked.

I started Vets2Industry to provide a free resource library for the military community – active, guard, reserve, veteran, military-spouse, dependent children, Blue-Star & Gold-Star Families, and caregivers – so they know which organizations provide free services and benefits. V2I also serves to break the circle of ignorance by listing companies that have opportunities for veterans, those that have specific military hiring programs, those that are on the 100 Military Friendly companies list, and those that selflessly provide Fortune 500 mentors for a year to transitioning service members through their partnership with American Corporate Partners. The goal is to educate all 220,000 to 240,000 transitioning service members each year and their dependents on free resources to ease their transition and life needs, and more importantly, provide hope.

Between 18 and 20 veterans and service personnel take their own lives every day of the year.  They commit suicide at a much higher rate than the general population.  Depression and stress often lead to PTSD, which is a major suicide contributing factor.

The annual VetsRally4Vets Top Dog Trophy challenge is something very special – a gathering where veterans from all the uniformed Services meet for a friendly inter-Service team motorsports competition to see which Service will emerge as the “Top Dog,” but where the real winners are our fellow veterans struggling with life-threatening depression.

Over 6,000 veterans and active duty personnel take their own lives every year – that’s 20 lives every day.  Almost one veteran lost every hour of every day.

These losses are both tragic and preventable.

The critical first step in reducing veteran suicide is educating the extended veteran community about the early warning signs: such as depression and social isolation.

The Rally4Vets program offers an opportunity for the motorsports enthusiast community to help reduce veteran suicides by raising the awareness level about veteran suicide and resources available to veterans dealing with PTSD.  The program supports the mission of the Disabled Veteran Empowerment Network – DVEN.org.
